In today’s world, we use UPI for everything, from buying vegetables to paying electricity bills. Fast and secure payments are essential, but when millions use UPI at the same time, it puts pressure on the system. To handle this, NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) has announced new UPI rules effective from August 1, 2025. Let’s understand what these new rules are, why they are being implemented, and how they will benefit you.

Why Are These New UPI Rules Being Introduced?
- To reduce server load on the UPI system
- To make transactions faster and more reliable
- To reduce failed transaction issues
- To keep the system, secure for all users
What Are the New UPI Rules?
Limit on Balance Checks
Many of us check our account balance multiple times a day without realising it. From August 1, 2025, you will be able to check your balance a maximum of 50 times per day per UPI app.
- If you use multiple UPI apps (PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm), you will get 50 checks per app.
- This will reduce unnecessary server load, ensuring faster services.
Limit on Checking Linked Accounts
You will now be able to check which bank account is linked to your mobile number only 25 times per day per app. This will also reduce server pressure and ensure smoother transactions for everyone.
Auto Payments Will Be Processed Only During Specific Hours
From now on, auto payments like electricity bills, OTT subscriptions, and mobile recharges will only be processed during these specific slots:
- Before 10 AM
- Between 1 PM and 5 PM
- After 9:30 PM
These are known as non-peak hours, ensuring your payments are processed smoothly without server delays. If your auto payment is set outside these hours, it will automatically shift to these slots.
Limit on Checking the Status of Pending Payments
If your payment is stuck, you will now be able to check its status only 3 times per day, with a minimum gap of 90 seconds between each check. This will help reduce server load and ensure faster resolution of transactions.
Other Important Changes You Should Know
- Faster payment response times have been implemented, reducing processing to 15 seconds and failed payment reversals to 10 seconds.
- Recipient names will be shown before payment confirmation to avoid wrong transfers.
- Chargeback requests are now limited to 10 per month, with a maximum of 5 per individual or company.
How Will These Rules Impact Your UPI Usage?
- You will need to limit your balance checks to avoid hitting the daily limit.
- You will need to keep track of auto payment timing to avoid failures.
- If a payment is pending, avoid checking its status repeatedly; wait 90 seconds between checks.
- Keep your UPI apps updated for smooth operation under the new rules.
