E20 Ethanol Fuel: Is It Safe for Your Vehicle?

E20 is petrol which is a mixture of 20% ethanol and 80% normal petrol. Ethanol is a renewable fuel, which is prepared from sugarcane, corn or other agricultural crops. Its biggest advantage is that it spreads less pollution than normal petrol and reduces India’s dependence on foreign oil.

The Government of India has set a target of 20% ethanol blending across the country by 2025. Earlier this target was till 2030, but due to fast progress it was extended. This will give additional income to farmers, less expenditure on oil import and relief to the environment.

Effects of E20 fuel on your vehicle

Effect on Mileage (Fuel Efficiency)

  • Ethanol has less energy than petrol.
  • Energy density of petrol: about 42 MJ/kg
  • Energy density of ethanol: about 26 MJ/kg

Because of this, when you use it, the engine will have to burn a little more fuel to get the same power. Result: Your car’s mileage can decrease by an average of 2% to 5%.

  • In newer and advanced engines the reduction is less (2-4%).
  • In older engines the mileage drop can be more (5-8%).

Impact on engine

  • Ethanol absorbs moisture. There is a risk of corrosion in parts like pistons, cylinders and valves of the engine after long-term use.
  • New engines manufactured after April 2023 are this Fuel compatible, so there is no major problem in them.
  • Long-term effects may be visible in old vehicles.

Effect on the fuel system

Ethanol‘s effects are not just limited to the engine, but also the fuel system. Rubber and plastic gaskets, seals and pipes may deteriorate prematurely. Metal fuel tanks and pipes are at increased risk of rust due to moisture.

Effect of E20 on old and new vehicles

Old Vehicles (Pre-2019 Models)

Older vehicles not designed for this Fuel may face the following issues:

  • Defect in gaskets and seals – leakage problem.
  • Fuel pump and injector failurestarting problems or fuel supply problems.
  • Corrosion – damage to metal parts and fuel tank.
  • Drop in mileage – 5-10% of normal.
  • Changing fuel filter more frequently: Ethanol blending may cause the fuel filter to clog up more quickly due to its poor ability to remove particulate or rust.

New and E20 Compatible Vehicles

BS6-II vehicles manufactured after April 2023 and especially it-compatible vehicles can use it fuel without any problem.

  • These use ethanol-resistant materials such as fluoropolymer, nylon 11.
  • Fuel pumps and injectors are also designed for this Fuel.
  • Mileage drop is negligible (0-2%).
  • No negative impact on engine and warranty.

Will E20 fuel void my vehicle warranty?

If your vehicle is not E20compatible and suffers any damage, the warranty claim may be rejected. But this does not affect newer E20-compatible vehicles.

How do I know if my vehicle is E20-compliant?

Check the vehicle’s Owner’s Manual.
The fuel tank lid may say “E20 Compatible”.
Ask the company’s service center.
A model-wise list is also available on government and auto websites.
Note: Most BS6-II vehicles made after 2023 are it compatible.

Will E20 increase the maintenance of vehicles?

In older vehicles, yes. You’ll need to pay more attention to gaskets, seals, fuel pump and fuel filter.
In newer E20-compliant vehicles, maintenance remains the same.

Conclusion

E20 fuel is a big step towards environment and energy security for India. But how much it will affect your vehicle depends on how new your vehicle is and whether it is this Fuel compatible or not.

  • Old vehicles – impact on mileage and parts, more maintenance required.
  • New vehicles (E20-compatible) – usable without any problem.
